Parallels meet at INFINITY!!!

I still remember my geometry lessons at school, when our teacher used to tell that parallel lines meet at infinity. Now if we see there are many things going along parallel in our society it means we should consider that they will meet at infinity - or simply they will never meet. One same thing I would highlight today is the two parallel education systems going side by side in our country. This also indicates that they will never meet means that the bifurcation between the people in these education systems will exist till the end.

The education system that our country contains include matriculation/ intermediate or O&A levels. Both the systems have a specific class being their customers, which means that the poor or middle class of our society goes to matric/inter system and the elite ones go to O&A levels. If we critically analyse this, we can well notice that the gap between rich and poor is increasing through this divergence.

Simultaneously, governement is not providing the right funding to the goverment education system which entirely includes matric/inter education and the private set up of this system is not making adequate actions to allocate value to it. A bitter truth to be told here is that according to a report by United Nations Development Programme (UNDP), Pakistan only invests a skimpy 2.9% of GDP to education, while the other developing countries like Kenya, Africa, Ghana they invest between 5 to 7% of the GDP in education. Also, everyone must have heard about the unethical activities in the form of cheating carried on during the examinations which is completely ignored by the officials because they say they are bound by some restrictions over them from political parties.

On the other hand, the system in O&A levels is quite well organized, from course to examinations and teachers to the schooling environment, everything seems to be very well organized and within a structure.  But, the dillemma is that only rich or elite of our society can go to such schools which provide a good education and environment too. So the poor are totally neglected though they are completely burried under the constraints of inflation and social insecurities.

With reference to an article published in Dawn news by Rudina Xhafferi and Khalid Iqbal talking about an education revolution focussing on the fact that provided the current economical contraints things can become better if followed strategically. In education sector they advise the involvement of undergraduate and graduate students—for assistance in the education of primary and secondary class students. An example of this being seen currently at a leading business school of Karachi, IoBM, where students were asked to participate willingly to teach children mostly at slum schools.

If we were to solely rely on the government's fundings and attention, i guess we would go in the stone ages and start from zero again. But the time is that we must put in our own efforts and move towards betterment not thinking that parallels do not meet but thinking that that paralles have no ends and they keep on moving ahead for a better tomorrow.

Attend to core issues now!

It looks like we have been sleeping since a month now. All the attention diverted to cricket since a while and the core issues to be discussed were kept aside. Today, finally India won the semi-final and Pakistan is not moving forward in the WC so i guess Cricket craze is over, can we get back to the main issues now?

Today, being the semi-final of cricket WC Pakistan vs India, my younger brother wanted to buy the Pakistan team shirt in order to show support towards the team. We went to the neighborhood sports shop which was so much crowded that we had to shout that we need a medium size shirt and he replied he is out of stock and closing the shop now.

Then with anxiety, we planned to go to Zaineb market at Saddar where we did not find any place to park the car first, managing to do so, we stepped out and tried to find the medium size which every shopkeeper sold for not a rupee less than fifteen hundred. They knew it was demanded so much, people will buy if they will charge more couple of thousands as well. As we managed to buy the shirts we got home till the match started and painted our faces green chanting GO GREEN!!! to support our team.

In all the suport game and hype that was created for the WC, we forgot that one team has to loose. Though, being a Pakistani we wanted our team to win but it was not destined to be so we didn't perform well. Now as the cricket hype ends, people must be cursing themselves as why they spent so much on buying the team shirts and that too for a premium price. In all this time, i think forty days or so, we basically  forgot to think about the core issues our country is facing be it our debts from IMF, terrorism, corruption or conspiracies about our country and the list goes on ...

By winning the Cricket WC, do you think the core issues that our country is facing would be solved? Do you think Pakistan would have seen some improvements in the current situations oif we would have won? No, this is not what was supposed to happen. Because for Pakistan, they make different rules, when we won T20 WC the scheduled time for it was revised to one year only. Why? Can't they see Pakistanis move forward? or what else is the reason ...

I appreciate one local sports channel effort in this case which supports my point here. They put a journalist to host a sports program in the commentary break between the matches, so that public can always relate dirty politicians talk to him while they watch the cricket match.

Why so much hype??

I am kind of tired of listening to the cricket Semi final between Pakistan and India now, some call it the clash of civilizations, the other call it a war. But in my opinion, we should let the game be a game.... obviously being a Pakistani I want Pakistan team to win the game, but making it a war against each other is not the way it should be.
Every TV channel has the same news all over, Okay! i know its a big thing but shouldn't we also think that anything is possible in a game? Last night I was watching a program at one of the leading news channels of our country, in which they had cricket professionals from India and Pakistan, constantly passing comments about their team winning and praising their boys. Isn't that just for generating a good ranking for the channel? They speak on the game as if the other team isn't competent enough, obviously both the teams have the skills that is why they both have reached the semi-finals, then what is the point of passing remarks about other team skills and what they are able to do?
On the other hand, both the countries' nation has so much high hopes from their teams that if their team lost it will become a matter of life and death for them. So the weak hearts should be carefull as no one knows what results they may witness... Our captain, Afridi is also of the opinion that this should be treated as a game only and I think he advised this to both the countries' politicians also.
A very funny thing I came across was that both the countries never agree on any single thing, be it the Kashmir issue, or water disputes or whatever big or small, but finally they have agreed on having a holiday the same day and they are united to shut their offices down today!! ;-)

Welcome Note...

To begin with, this blog has been created especially for the course "Print Media" taught under the program of Media Management at Institute of Business Management, Karachi - Pakistan.
On utter request of our instructor Prof. Shahida Kazi to read and read, I have decided to create this blog where print media students can post their comments about what they have been reading... For an advise, these blogs can carry a good weightage to the final grade as well because they will show how much the students have been reading and how much aware they are about the current affairs through newspapers and other articles in the magazines and papers regarding the prevailing conditions in the country. Also, about the different books that students have been reading whether its a fiction or true story, a recipe book or a travelogue, and whichever book the students will read during the course. The posts may include the lectures covered in the class for those students who may miss any session due to any reason, so that a track is created online for all the lectures that we attend...
Hopefully, this will add more value to the course and will help students read more and more and more according to the instructor's requirements...
looking forward to the posts ahead...

Regards,
Javeria
