I still remember my geometry lessons at school, when our teacher used to tell that parallel lines meet at infinity. Now if we see there are many things going along parallel in our society it means we should consider that they will meet at infinity - or simply they will never meet. One same thing I would highlight today is the two parallel education systems going side by side in our country. This also indicates that they will never meet means that the bifurcation between the people in these education systems will exist till the end.
The education system that our country contains include matriculation/ intermediate or O&A levels. Both the systems have a specific class being their customers, which means that the poor or middle class of our society goes to matric/inter system and the elite ones go to O&A levels. If we critically analyse this, we can well notice that the gap between rich and poor is increasing through this divergence.
Simultaneously, governement is not providing the right funding to the goverment education system which entirely includes matric/inter education and the private set up of this system is not making adequate actions to allocate value to it. A bitter truth to be told here is that according to a report by United Nations Development Programme (UNDP), Pakistan only invests a skimpy 2.9% of GDP to education, while the other developing countries like Kenya, Africa, Ghana they invest between 5 to 7% of the GDP in education. Also, everyone must have heard about the unethical activities in the form of cheating carried on during the examinations which is completely ignored by the officials because they say they are bound by some restrictions over them from political parties.
On the other hand, the system in O&A levels is quite well organized, from course to examinations and teachers to the schooling environment, everything seems to be very well organized and within a structure. But, the dillemma is that only rich or elite of our society can go to such schools which provide a good education and environment too. So the poor are totally neglected though they are completely burried under the constraints of inflation and social insecurities.
With reference to an article published in Dawn news by Rudina Xhafferi and Khalid Iqbal talking about an education revolution focussing on the fact that provided the current economical contraints things can become better if followed strategically. In education sector they advise the involvement of undergraduate and graduate students—for assistance in the education of primary and secondary class students. An example of this being seen currently at a leading business school of Karachi, IoBM, where students were asked to participate willingly to teach children mostly at slum schools.
If we were to solely rely on the government's fundings and attention, i guess we would go in the stone ages and start from zero again. But the time is that we must put in our own efforts and move towards betterment not thinking that parallels do not meet but thinking that that paralles have no ends and they keep on moving ahead for a better tomorrow.
